Exam Registration Information

What do I need to know before registering my students?
  • Before registering students, teachers should familiarize with the structure of the exam, in particular they need to consider the exam levels and categories, as well as the typologies of students that are participating. Click on the links below to read a detailed information on these three criteria.  Home-schooled students, students who have studied Italian outside a traditional school setting, and college students can participate in the competition, but should contact the NIE director to determine the exam level (nationalitalianexam@gmail.com).

How do I register for the exam?
The NIE is delivered electronically on a web platform called Lingco. Teachers and students need to register on this platform to participate. Follow the three steps below to register for the NIE:

  1. Create an account in Lingco.  Click this link to start the process using a special NIE instructor code.
  2. Register for the NIE. Once you’ve created an account you can register for the NIE using the Lingco NIE Registration page.  Here you will include general information, the levels you are interested in and the total amount of "seats" (students) you want to order. This will generate an invoice with instructions on how to pay. The invoice will be sent to your email. See more info on the payment page.
  3. Assign students to levels. Next you’ll assign your students to their respective levels of the exam using the ‘Roster’ page for each exam level selected at the registration stage (generated in Step 2). Select the level for which you want to register your students on the top left menu. Then, go to the roster page (on the left menu) and here you will  include a list of their email addresses. You can add your students at once, or any time, but no later than a week prior to the exam day.  At this point you will also be able to assign students to their categories.
  4. Students register. Each student will receive an email inviting them to respond. Once they respond to the email and complete a basic questionnaire, they are officially registered for the NIE.  Ask your school to include Lingco on their whitelist otherwise you and your students might not be able to receive messages from them. Students should have responded to their invitation and answered the pre-exam questionnaire at least a week prior to the day on which you have scheduled for them to take the exam. For example, Mr. Jones has scheduled the exam on March 10, then all his students should have replied to your email invitation and answered all the questions in the questionnaire by March 3rd.

We’ll walk you through each of the steps above in details in the link below and with our  instructional videos on Youtube.
